Rocky J. Squirrel - Witty, high-flying squirrel
featured in the animated cartoon ROCKY AND HIS FRIENDS/ABC/1959-61.

Rocket "Rocky" J. Squirrel (voice of June Foray) lives in the fictional town
of Frostbite Falls, Minnesota in Koochiching County, Minnesota. He wears a blue
aviator's hat with goggles and sports two large buck-teeth. Rocky's classic
catchphrase is "Hokey Smokes!"
Rocky's best friend is a goofy moose named
Bullwinkle
(voice of Bill Scott). Together they battled against the evil plots of Eastern
Block spies from Pottsylvania, Boris Badenov (Paul Frees) and his slinky female
assistant, Natasha Fatale (June Foray).
Rocky's other acquaintances were
Chauncey and Edgar (two gossipy townsfolk), Captain Peter "Wrongway" Peachfuzz,
and space aliens Gidney and Cloyd.
A documentary entitled Of Moose and Men: The
Rocky & Bullwinkle Story produced by Benjamin Brady Magliano and broadcast on
PBS on 3/16/91, chronicled the history of this classic cartoon series created by
Jay Ward and Bill Scott.
The special revealed such nuggets of nostalgia like the
name of the flight school that trained Rocky - Cedar Yorpantz Flying School. It
also gave classic bits of dialog like Rocky speaking to a dim-witted shipping
tycoon and saying "For a powerful magnate, you sure don't pick things up to
quick."
Rocky (named after fighter Rocky Graziano) later appeared on THE BULLWINKLE
SHOW/NBC/ABC/1961-64/1964-73/1981-82.
In 2000, Rocky and Bullwinkle appeared in the live-action theatrical release
The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle starring Robert De Niro as
Fearless Leader, Jason Alexander as Boris Badenov and Rene Russo as Natasha
Fatale.
A 15-foot-tall plaster statue of Rocky and Bullwinkle is located at 8218
Sunset Boulevard, the former site of Jay Ward Productions.
