Nudity on Television - 1980s
  • The CBS TV-Movie Gauguin the Savage (1980) starred David Carradine as the French primitive artist, Paul Gauguin (1848-1903) who spent his last years in the South Seas. The movie showed the artist painting a brown-skinned Tahitian girl on the beach. Three shots of full frontal nudity were seen during the telecast.

  • In 1983, the first TV series to show actor's "bare" their behind in a locker room scene was the NBC baseball team drama THE BAY CITY BLUES.

  • On the final scene of the episode "Moon for the Misbegotten" (9/30/1987) on the medical series ST. ELSEWHERE/NBC/1982-88 staff physician Dr. Donald Westphall (Ed Flanders), frustrated with the new administration that had taken over St. Eligius Hospital, pulled down his trousers and mooned Dr. John Gideon (Ronny Cox) saying "You can kiss my ass, pal." On the 4/27/1988 episode of ST. ELSEWHERE doctors performed surgery in the nude. TRIVIA NOTE: On October 4, 2005, comic Dane Cook kissed the butt of Charlize Theron (with her permission) on 'The Tonight Show' starring Jay Leno. The topic of kissing came about because Theron has planted an adoring  kiss on the buttocks of actress Shirley MacLaine during a Premiere Icon Party a few days earlier.

  • Playtex BraIn 1987 Playtex Bras premiered the first commercials with real lingerie models displaying their wares (bras and underwear) on national television. The days of brassiere draped mannequins and models wearing bras over a dress were over. Skin was in baby, Yeah!

  • In February 1989 Network TV broadcast a cowboy's penis (for less than a second) during the opening credits of LONESOME DOVE, a CBS four-part adaptation of Larry McMurtry's novel about a cattle drive.
