General Urko - Gorilla military leader of a futuristic society of evolved simians on the science fiction series THE PLANET OF THE APES/CBS/1974.

Mark Lenard as General Urko - THE PLANET OF THE APES

General Urko was charged with hunting down humans so they could be modified and controlled. When a couple of human astronauts from the year 1988 - Alan Virdon (Ron Harper) and Pete Burke (James Naughton - time-warped their spacecraft in this futuristic landscape of A.D. 3085, General Urko and his minions of gorillas on horseback searched the countryside to find and capture them. Mark Lenard played the role of Urko in the TV series.

TRIVIA NOTE: The TV series is based on the novel "Planet of the Apes" by Pierre Boulle. Other inspired spinoffs from the book included the films:

  • Planet of the Apes (1968) starring Charlton Heston
  • Beneath the Planet of the Apes (1969)
  • Escape from the Planet of the Apes (1971)
  • Conquest of the Planet of the Apes (1972)
  • Battle for the Planet of the Apes (1973)
  • Planet of the Apes (2001) starring Mark Wahlberg

The animated series RETURN TO THE PLANET OF THE APES/NBC/1975-76 continued the franchise of the 1974 TV series.

In the film Planet of the Apes (1968), gorilla General Urko (James Gregory) declared, “The only good a DEAD human.” James Gregory as Ursus repeated the same sentiment in the sequel Beneath the Planet of the Apes (1970).
