Rice-A-Roni TrolleyRice-a-Roni Cable Car - Lumbering up a hill on Powell Street with Alcatraz Island in the background, the San Francisco cable car No. 510 became famous when it displayed a Rice-a-Roni poster on its trolley chassis in the McCann-Erickson produced commercial shot in 1961. With the clanging of its bell, 'ol No. 510 rang out the praises of "The San Francisco Treat" to a nation of rice lovers. Trolley No. 4 (with Powell & Market Street markings) was also seen. The "San Francisco Treat" jingle (an adaptation of the 1920s "Barney Google" melody) read: "Rice-A-Roni, the San Francisco Treat/ Rice-A-Roni, the flavor can't be beat/One pan, no boiling, cooking ease/A Flavor that is sure to please/Rice-A-Roni, the San Francisco treat!" The ad campaign was produced for the Golden Grain Macaroni Company of San Leandro, California. TRIVIA NOTE: For two great cable car trolley crash scenes check out the motion pictures The Rock (1996) starring Sean Connery and Metro (1997) starring Eddie Murphy.
