Hartford Elk - Since 1974, Lawrence, a
ten-foot tall (hoof to antler tips), five hundred pound elk with eight point
antlers and thick reddish coat has been the TV symbol of the Hartford Insurance
Company (actually the incarnation of the Hartford Insurance logo of an mature
fully racked elk standing on a mountain).
Trained by Steve Martin (not the comedian) the Hartford Stag wandered through
the commercials as an announcer spouted the praises of Hartford Insurance.
Lawrence the Elk worked on the reward system. His favorite treat was an oat and
barley mix.
Originally discovered in a small zoo in Florida, Lawrence later moved to
Africa, USA, an animal behavior center located in Soledad Canyon, north of Los
Angeles.
The campaign was created by McCaffrey-McCall ad agency.
