Born in 2239, Lt. Uhura is the communications officer of African descent (Bantu
Tribe) stationed onboard the USS Enterprise, a starship whose mission was to
explore strange new worlds. Uhura enjoys music and enjoys singing to her fellow
crew members. Note: The word "Uhura" is Swahili for "freedom." The Uhura
character was the focus of the first "interracial kiss" on television when she
kissed her white commanding officer Captain James T. Kirk against her will in
episode #67 "Plato’s Stepchildren."
