Mrs. Olson - The TV spokeswoman for Folgers Coffee, made by Procter &
Gamble. Introduced in 1963, Mrs. Olson (Virginia Christine), was a Swedish woman
who seemed to know all the young couples in town whose husband's never asked for
a second cup of coffee. Of course, that was her cue to sell them on the idea of
Folgers Coffee whose catchphrases were "Mountain Grown." and "It's the richest
kind." The commercials ended in 1985.
During the July 30, 1997 monologue segment of THE TONIGHT SHOW, host Jay Leno
commented on a research study that said people who drink one cup of coffee a day
are more sexually active. Jay continued "Now you know why you never saw Mr.
Olson on the commercial. He was exhausted."
Born 1920 as Virginia Christine Kraft in Stanton, Iowa, the 5-foot-4 actress Virginia
Christina appeared in more than 150 movies and 300 television shows Her last TV
series job was providing voices to the cartoon series Scooby and Scrappy-Doo
(1979). Her movies included High Noon (1952), The Invasion of the Body Snatchers
(1956), Judgment at Nuremburg (1961) and Guess Who's Coming to Dinner (1967).
Virginia made her motion picture debut in the 1943 film Edge of Darkness
starring Errol Flynn and set in World War II Norway. As fate would have it, she
played a peasant girl named Miss Olson.
In 1971, Virginia's hometown honored her Folgers commercial work by transforming the city water tower into a giant
coffeepot. (120 feet high). On July 24,1996, Virginia Christine died in Los
Angeles due to complications from a heart ailment.
