Dean Martin Celebrity Roast
- This NBC award show had its origin on THE DEAN MARTIN
SHOW/NBC/1965-74 which featured a segment called "Man of the Week
Celebrity Roast" (first telecast in 1973). Seated at a banquet
table, one by one the guest of honor was affectionately insulted
about his career by his fellow celebrity friends. Now some wouldn't
consider being insulted much of an award, but it was all done in
fun.
The Dean Martin Celebrity Roasts were a fixture on the NBC Thursday night lineup
from 1973 to 1984. Celebrities roasted included such legendary stars as Lucille Ball, Redd Foxx, Sammy Davis, Jr. and Fran Sinatra,
Bob Hope, Ronald Reagan, Mohammad Ali, George Burns, Jackie Gleason,
John Wayne and Orson Welles.
Don Rickles, a favorite funny man and prankster attended many of
these functions. Some of his classic insults included: "Come right
in Frank (Sinatra). Make yourself at home...Hit somebody!"
Sinatra once said of Rickles, "I like Don Rickles, but that's
because I have no taste."
