Granny's
Moonshine
- The popular backwoods
beverage featured on the sitcom THE BEVERLY
HILLBILLIES/CBS/1962-71. Granny Clampett (Irene Ryan) set up a
still in the back of the Clampett mansion in Beverly Hills, by
the "cee-ment" pond so she could brew a secret recipe for her
private stock of moonshine (a.k.a. "White Lightnin'"-cause it
gets into the blood stream twice as fast) or Mountain Dew).
Granny knew her still was illegal but she insisted her moonshine
was just to be used for medicinal purposes only. It was her "rheumatiz
medicine." And when pressed, she admitted her whiskey wouldn't
cure rheumatism, but "it'll make ya happy ya got it!" Two sips
was enough for whatever ailed ya.
Once their neighbor, banker
Mr. Drysdale (Raymond Bailey) had a fever and Granny prescribed
a dose of her moonshine. Jed Clampett (Buddy Ebsen) warned
however "If he drinks that stuff he'll burst into flames."
Granny's moonshine was also referred to as Tennessee
Tranquilizer, Possum Ridge Penicillin, Possum Ridge Paralyzer,
Smokey Mountain Skullbuster and Smokey Mountain Soothing Syrup.
A good batch charred the tongue, made your eye balls spin and
locked your elbows.
TRIVIA NOTE: On the situation
comedy MAMA'S FAMILY/NBC/SYN/1983-86
senior citizen Thelma Harper (Vicki Lawrence) marketed a cold
remedy called "Mother Harper's Miracle Tonic" that made a person
forget why they took it in the first place. Its secret
ingredient was pure vanilla extract (35 percent alcohol).
