The
Double Deckers
- A youthful gang of boys and girls who hang
out in a London junkyard on the British children's series HERE COME
THE DOUBLE DECKERS!/ABC/1970-72. The Double Decker's base of
operation was a reconverted Double Decker bus.
The kids in the gang included Michael Auderson as
Brains; Gillian Bailey as Billie; Bruce Clark as Sticks; Peter Firth
as Scooper; Brinsley Forde as Spring; Debbie Russ as Tiger; and
Douglas Simmonds as Doughnut. Melvyn Hayes appeared as the kid's
adult friend, Albert.
The series was filmed at the Associated British
Picture Corporation Studios in Borehamwood (Elstree) and later the
EMI-MGM Studios. In America, the series 17 episodes ran from
September 12, 1970 to September 17, 1972 on the ABC Network. The
Double-Deckers first aired on the BBC from September 12, 1970 to
January 2, 1971.
TRIVIA NOTE: The sign
in the gang's scrap yard HQ which reads "London 17 miles" is an
in-joke, because that is actually the distance from the film studios
in Borehamwood to London where the series is supposed to be set! In
the 1980's, Brinsley Forde was the lead singer of the reggae band,
Aswad.
