Click for Kellogg'sTony the Tiger - Wearing a red scarf around his neck, Tony the Tiger, the orange and black stripped mascot for Kellogg's Sugar Frosted Flakes has touted the goodness of this sugar-coated cereal since 1952 with the bellowing roar "They're GR-R-REAT!" Originally Tony the Tiger appeared with such animal mascots as Katie the Kangaroo, Newt the Gnu, and Zeke the Zebra, as part of a contest to find a new cereal mascot for the box for "Kellogg's Sugar Frosted Flakes of Corn." Eventually Tony's popularity took prominence and the other mascots soon faded into advertising history. Years later, Tony shared the spotlight with a smaller tiger character called "Boy" who later became Tony, the Tiger Jr. (voice of Jack Haley, Jr.), the mascot for Frosted Rice cereal. In 1974, the Chinese Year of the Tiger, Mrs. Tony the Tiger gave birth to a daughter named Antoinette. Tony started out as a six-to-seven-inch illustration (designed by Martin Provensen, children's book author & illustrator) but over the years has grown to a height of six-and-a-half feet. Thurel Ravenscroft (who sang the Grinch's theme song for "How the Grinch Stole Christmas.") provided Tony the Tiger's boisterous voice. The original Tony the Tiger campaign was created by ad agency executive, Leo Burnett.
