Sister Bertrille Walks the Dog in the wind
TRIVIA NOTE: The
series is based on the book "The Fifteenth Pelican," written by Tere Rios, which was the maiden name of the
late Theresa Versace, mother of the late Humbert R. Versace. The Flying Nun
became quite popular with Catholic religious organizations, who
praised the show for humanizing the image of nuns.
Before Sally Field accepted the role of
Sister Bertrille, the part was offered to Patty Duke (The Patty
Duke Show) and Ronnie Troup,
who later played Polly Williams on
My Three Sons.
In one episode, Sister Bertrille is
looking at home movies of herself as a teenager. The
home movies were actually footage from Sally Field's previous series GIDGET/ABC/1965-66.
Where is the cast now? Alejandro Rey
(Carlos) died
of lung cancer in 1987. Vito Scotti (Formento) died of lung cancer in 1996. Marge
Redmond (Sister Jacqueline) portrayed "Sarah Tucker" in Cool Whip
Commercials of the 1970s She is still alive as is Madeleine Sherwood
who played Reverend Mother. And, Shelley Morrison (Sister Sixto)
currently plays the role of Rosario the acerbic maid on the NBC
sitcom WILL AND GRACE.
Sally Field, of course, became an Oscar
winning actress and appeared in such films as Sybil (1976)
Norma Rae (1979), Steel Magnolias (1989), Mrs.
Doubtfire (1993) Forrest Gump (1994). In 2002, she starred
as Judge Kate Nolan in the short lived ABC TV series THE COURT.
When
Sally accepted her second Academy Award, for the film Places in the
Heart (1984), she proclaimed "The first time I didn't feel it
but this time I feel it and I can't deny the fact you like me.
Right now, you like me!"
Her statement has been lampooned ever since.
Sally Field is the step-daughter of stuntman/actor Jock
Mahoney.

It's a bird! It's a plane!
It's Sister Bertrille

You don't need wings to fly
Tiptoe through the sky
As long as you got heaven by
You don't need wings to fly
