Lorelai lives in a quaint community of green lawns and clapboard houses
known as Stars Hollow (pop. 9,973). She is a 32-year-old single parent,
headstrong, addicted to coffee [“she's 90% water and 10% caffeine“] and
the daughter of very rich parents. Unfortunately, Lorelai didn’t
appreciate her controlling mother and so after she got pregnant at 16 by a
guy named Christopher Hayden, Lorelai left home to make it on her own. She
started as a maid, then earned a management position at the nearby
Independence Inn. One day, Lorelei dreams of opening her own inn.
The Lovely Lorelai
Lorelai’s daughter, Lorelai “Rory“ Leigh Gilmore is now 16-years-old and Lorelai
(her mother) is trying her best to be a friend to her daughter and avoid
the traditional parental role. Rory is 5 feet, 7 inches tall and many people in town mistake the two
Lorelai's for
sisters. Rory's best friend is Lane Kim, a Korean-American teenager
(and drummer in a rock band) who goes to Rory’s old school Stars Hollow
High School. Rory's boyfriends are Dean (her first), and Jess (Luke's nephew)..
Lorelai’s parents – socialite mother Emily Gilmore and father
Richard ooze of an old money heritage. They run with the upper crust
while Lorelai hangs with a seemingly happy class of bohemians like Sookie
St. James, Lorelai’s best friend and chef at the Independence Inn; Luke
Danes, the owner of Luke’s Coffee Shop; and Patricia LaCosta [a.k.a. Miss
Patty], the local dance instructor and social gossip who likes to play
matchmaker with Lorelai.
Meanwhile, all was well in Lorelai’s life until her
straight "A" student daughter got accepted to the prestigious Chilton
Preparatory school in nearby Hartford. To get enough cash to enroll Rory, Lorelai
begrudgingly agrees to take money from her estranged parents so that Harvard hopeful
Rory can attend Chilton Prep. In exchange for the cash, Lorelai and Rory
must have dinner every Friday with the grandparents and keep them abreast
of what‘s going on in their life. It’s a tough call for Lorlelai, but the
arrangement let’s Rory get to know her grandparents and possibly lets Lorelai learn to better understand her mom and dad.
Lorelai's romantic interests included Max Medina (Lorelai
declined his offer of marriage), and Luke Danes, her long time friend and
confidant. Trivia Note: Lorelai has size 9 shoes. Twinkies are her
favorite snack food. Lorelai's major concern in life: That Rory not follow in
her footsteps and get pregnant too young.
