Riverside, Iowa - A small town in Iowa
that bills itself as the future birthplace of Captain James T. Kirk,
a starship officer on the sci-fi series STAR TREK/NBC/1966-69. In
the mid 1980s, a citizen from Riverside, Iowa discovered that the
creators of the STAR TREK series mentioned that their heroic
character Captain Kirk was born in Iowa (episode No. 40 Stardate
3478.2 "The Deadly Affair" first aired in 1967).
So, with the blessing of the local City Council, the town proclaimed
itself Kirk's future hometown and placed a sign along their
interstate that proudly proclaims "Riverside: Where the Trek Begins"
(visible off Interstate 218). The birth date of James Tiberius Kirk
has been set for March 22, 2233.
Riverside is now the annual host of James T. Kirk's birthday party
on March 22nd (the real birth date of actor William Shatner who
played Captain Kirk) and a Star Trek Festival known as "Trek Fest"
in the month of June.
A 20-foot-long float of the USS Riverside (a replica of the
USS Enterprise) sits east of the town in Legion Park on Highway 22
(off interstate US 218 South). See also -
