Fess Parker as Davy CrockettCoonskin Caps - The frontier adventure DAVY CROCKETT on the ABC segments of DISNEYLAND in the 1950s starred Fess Parker as Indian fighter and pioneer Davy Crockett who carried a long rifle called Betsy and wore a coonskin cap. His hat became popular with all of the younger viewers who turned the fuzzy fetish into a national craze. The official Davy Crockett hat was made of rabbit fur and had a cardboard tag displaying the image of Fess Parker. The coonskin cap retailed for $1.98. Life magazine commented on the coonskin cap craze with "Which will be exhausted first; the supply of raccoons or the parents who have to buy the caps?" In 1957, it was the adults, namely the women, who started another raccoon craze when a wild but short-lived rush for vintage raccoon coats from the 1920s began. Davy Crocket Craze
