Stetson Hat, The - The typical cowboy hat with a high peak and broad brim worn by generations of movie and TV cowboys (to protect them from sun and rain). The Stetson hat was named after John Batterson. Stetson, a 19th century hat maker based in Philadelphia. On the western adventure BONANZA/NBC/1959-73, the hulking Hoss Cartwright (Dan Blocker) wore a larger version of the Stetson called a ten-gallon hat (inspired by the Spanish sombrero worn by Mexican horsemen).
