Fonzie's Leather Jacket - The
ultra-cool garage mechanic
Arthur Herbert Fonzarelli (Henry
Winkler) always wore a leather jacket during each episode of the
sitcom HAPPY DAYS/ABC/1974-84.

During the 1974-76 seasons, Fonzie was
given a leather jacket but (according to a network ruling)
couldn't wear it except when riding his motorcycle because it made
him look like a hoodlum. Working around the ruling, producer Garry
Marshall slyly had the writers include a bike in every scene with Winkler until
the ruling was dropped. "And that's how I got to wear leather",
said Winkler.
According to an AP interview with Henry Winkler, the first 12 episodes of the show, the Fonz wore a tan or
puce colored McGregor golf jacket. Winkler confessed
"And let me just say, it's was really difficult to
be cool in a 'puce' golf jacket."
Since 1980, one of the Fonz's brown
leather jackets has been on exhibit at the Smithsonian Institute
in Washington, D.C. and another jacket is now on display at the
Hard Rock Cafe in London.
A second leather clad character on the
program was rock star Leather Tuscadero (Suzi Quatro), a rising
rock 'n' roll performer. She was clad head-to-toe in leather with
silver studded leather collar and choker.
