Bandleader Outfits - It was a
running gag on THE TONIGHT SHOW WITH JOHNNY CARSON/NBC/1962-92 for
host Johnny Carson to comment and even ridicule the bandleader's
clothing especially in the case of the hip bandleader, Doc
Severinsen. Skitch Henderson, the former bandleader of THE
TONIGHT SHOW, was teased for his goatee beard and his tight fitting
apparel, but Doc Severinsen, earned a reputation for wearing
outrageously "Mod" clothing with wild colors and textures.

Carson
One night when Doc wore a puce Pucci tie, Johnny Carson remarked,
"I wouldn't wear that to fondle Randolph Scott's saddle horn!"
Delighted with the uproarious audience response, the show's
writers decided to make Doc's wardrobe a recurring nightly event.
Over the years, Doc was seen wearing crushed velvet knickers,
rhinestone jumpsuits, flamboyant satin shirts and tapestry cloaks.
Years earlier, the clothing of Sammy Spear was the brunt of many
jokes when he conducted the orchestra on THE JACKIE GLEASON
SHOW/CBS/1962-70.
