COS Project Computer - Supercomputer on
episode No. 6 "Ghost in the Machine" on the fantasy drama THE
X-FILES/FOX/1993-2002. When executives of the high-tech firm Eurisko in
Crystal City, Virginia
decide to terminate their artificial intelligence project, the COS (Central
Operating System) computer began killing anyone who tries to shut it down. Monitoring events through security cameras, COS continues to kill those who
threaten its existence.

The COS monitors FBI Agents Mulder and Scully
| Scully: |
So the machine killed Drake out of self-defense? |
| Mulder: |
Self-preservation. It's the primary instinct of all
sentient beings. |
| Scully: |
Mulder, that level of artificial intelligence is
decades away from being realized. |
| Mulder: |
Then why was our government trying to usurp Wilczek's
research? |
After electrocuting one executive, plummeting
another down a elevator shaft and trying to suck FBI agent Dana Scully
(Gillian Anderson) into the blades of a huge vacuum fan, COS was finally
neutralized when Agent Mulder (David Duchovny) downloaded a disabling virus
into the COS mainframe.
The computer's last words were "Brad, why?" Brad Wilczek
was the computer's creator, who provided the computer virus so that the
sentient computer system could not fall into the government's hands (The
Department of Defense).
Later, as a damage control team assessed the dormant computer, a light
suddenly flickers. The End?
