Saturday Night Live Contests - On November 19, 1977, the NBC weekend comedy satire SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE sponsored a contest called "Anyone Can Host Saturday Night Live." Entrants were to mail their ballots (found in TV Guide) c/o "The Anyone Can Host SNL," P.O. Box 722, Radio City Station, New York, NY 10019. The five finalists were: Connie Crawford, a Vasser Freshman; David Lewis a dropout from Oregon; Deb Blair, a mom from Peoria; Mrs. Spillman, an eighty-year-old grandmother; and Governor Knipe of Montana. And the winner was......the sweet little old grandma. Another SNL contest occurred on a pre-Christmas show in 1976 when Candice Bergen hosted the program. It seems that comedian John Belushi didn't have any plans for Christmas like all the rest of the SNL staff. An excerpt of the script reads: "Well, it's the last show before Christmas, and after it's over we'll go out and celebrate. Yes, everybody's going home, everybody except Belushi. SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE proudly announces-The Adopt Belushi for Christmas Contest. If you think you're that special American family why not write...?" [John Belushi then appeared] "Hi, I'm John Belushi...I love Christmas. I'd love to set around the yule log and play with your daughter...I'm not fussy." See also FISH - Larry the Lobster"
