Gargoyles - The animated fantasy series GARGOYLES/SYN/1994-95 followed the adventures of lone survivors of a race of Gargoyle creatures who turned to stone by day and came to life by night. When millionaire David Xanatos (voice of Jonathan Frakes) transported the remains of an ancient Scottish castle adorned with stone gargoyles to his New York City penthouse, he discovered the truth of the Gargoyles. Lead by Goliath (voice of Keith David), the Gargoyles included Brooklyn (Jeff Bennett); Broadway (Bill Fagerbakke); Hudson (Edward Asner); Lexington (Thom Adcox-Hernandez); Bronx (Frank Welker) and Demona (Marina Sirtis) and Angela, Goliath and Demona's daughter (Brigette Bako). Befriended by a female police detective named Eliza Maza (voice of Salli Richardson) Goliath summarized their plight saying: "One thousand years ago, (994 A.D.) superstition and the sword ruled. It was an time of darkness, it was a world of fear, it was the age of Gargoyles. Stone by day, warriors by night, we were betrayed by the humans we had sworn to protect, frozen in stone by a magic spell for a thousand years. Now, here in Manhattan, the spell is broken and we live again! We are defenders of the night, we are Gargoyles!" The spin-off series GARGOYLES: THE GOLIATH CHRONICLES/SYN/ABC/1996-1997 continued the adventures of Goliath and his compatriots as they try to convince the citizens of Manhattan they mean them no harm, especially an anti-gargoyle group known as The Quarryman. TRIVIA NOTE: In European culture, Gargoyle figures originally served as water spouts to direct the water clear of a wall on buildings and churches. Their hideous appearance was thought to frighten away evil spirits. The British produced series THE GNOMES OF DULWICH/BBC/1969 followed the lives of a couple stone garden gnomes who observed the foibles of humans while gossiping about the plastic gnomes in an adjacent garden.
