the Great - Hook-nosed disciple of daredevil
Evel Knievel on the variety program THE MUPPET SHOW/SYN/1976-81. The Great Gonzo
was a creature of unknown origin. Reportedly, he was a war baby with a parrot
for a mother and as for father, any "thing" was possible [later revealed to be
an outer space alien]. Gonzo made his first appearance in a 1970 Christmas
special entitled "The Great Santa Claus Switch."
By trade, Gonzo was a fearless stuntman who was extremely confident
of his abilities. He clearly believed that he could do the impossible like
catching a speeding cannonball with his bare hands.
His companions included Fozzie the Bear, Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy and
Rizzo the Rat, his roommate. Gonzo was romantically involved with a chicken named Camilla.
The concept for Gonzo was suggested by
Jack Burns, formerly of Burns and Schreiber comedy team and developed and
performed by Dave Goelz.
Gonzo's relatives included Ubergonzo, an alien from outer space first seen in
Muppets from Space 1999) where Gonzo meets his long-lost extraterrestrial
family, and a British Cockney speaking cousin named Whitechapel who looks just
like Gonzo. A baby version of Gonzo appeared in Jim Henson's cartoon MUPPET
Camilla and Gonzo
