Paul Bryan's Disease - When Universal
Studios was planning a show called RUN FOR YOUR LIFE/NBC/1965-68
about a lawyer, Paul Bryan (Ben Gazzara) with an incurable disease,
they needed a fatal disease that could be diagnosed two years before
the "end" and yet have the victim display no appreciable symptoms.
Andy Lee, the chief of Research at Universal Studios found the answer with
the disease called Chronic Myelocytic Leukemia.
As Paul Bryan put it in the pilot film "I have one of those
afflictions they name after the poor fellow that discovered it." He
had a 1000 to 1 odds of beating the disease.
The series was based on an episode of KRAFT SUSPENSE THEATRE that
aired in April 1965.
