Bandit entered into the life of Laura Ingalls Wilder (Melissa Gilbert) soon after her faithful little mutt Jack died. Laura was reluctant to accept Bandit, but she eventually learned to love him. Bandit debuted in the second season on the episode "A Day at the Fair."

Jeff the Dog played the role of Bandit, He was trained by veteran animal handler Ray Berwick and Ray's nephew Brian Renfro. Michael Landon bestowed the name of "Bandit" on Jeff the dog because he thought the black fur across the dog's face looked like a mask.

Jeff (Jeffrey) the dog had two other litter companions: Jake and Joey. After three seasons, Jeff was retired from the show. He is now in doggy heaven.
