Scruffy was the family pet of Mrs. Carolyn Muir (Hope Lange), a widowed writer who lived at Schooner Bay, New England in Gull Cottage, formally owned by Captain Daniel Gregg (Edward Mulhare) whose ghostly form still haunted the house.
