SalamiSalami - One of Steve Allen's trademarks on the early edition of THE TONIGHT SHOW during the 1950s was handing out huge salami (among other odd gifts) to members of his studio audience. He often would give them to Mrs. Sterling, an avid fan who never missed a performance. Once Allen gave advice to immigrants trying to smuggle salami into this country. "Here are a few smuggling hints to you people on Ellis Island with your salami. Wear a pair of open-toed salami; tell customs men your salami is a flat clarinet; slice one up as an arch supporters; put a buckle on it and wear it as a money belt; stamp it as a two iron; or put a fox head on it and say it's a fur piece." Another time Steve Allen stood on a street corner, waved down a taxi cab, yanked open the rear door, threw in a huge salami, slammed the door and yelled "Grand Central Station and step on it!"  See also - NICKNAMES - "Salami Sam"
