Johnny Carson's Beard - On 2/4/85 Johnny Carson returned to NBC's THE TONIGHT SHOW sporting a gray beard he grew while on vacation. However, he only kept it for a week. On the Lincoln's birthday telecast (2/12/85), he commented he didn't think it advisable to appear in a theater with a beard. TRIVIA NOTE: On  episode No.36 "The French, They Are a Funny Race" (Apr. 6, 1960) on the sitcom THE MANY LOVES OF DOBIE GILLIS/CBS/1959-63 beatnik Maynard G. Krebs (Bob Denver) like shaved off  his goatee to impress a blonde French foreign exchange student. 

            

Fraser: You know, my mother died when I was very young. I don't remember a lot about that time except...except my father's beard. I don't remember him crying or talking about her. I just woke up one morning and I noticed he had a beard, and it kept getting longer and longer, and he got thinner and  he stopped going to work. My mother died, and my father stopped living...And then one morning, I woke up and there was a breakfast waiting for me at the table. Oatmeal and, uh, sliced banana. And he was clean shaven. And he was crying.   Walter: Well, your dad was a very strong man.   Fraser: He just woke up and the wind was from the south, and he found he still knew the difference between hawk and a handsaw.                     --Due South
