Dana Scully's Crucifix - FBI forensic physician Dana Katherine Scully (Gillian Anderson) wears a small gold crucifix around her neck during episodes of the fantasy drama THE X-FILES/FOX/1993-2002. The cross was left behind in her car after she was abducted by Duane Barry on the episode "Ascension."

Fox Mulder: [Mulder recovers Scully's gold cross necklace from the trunk of her car, and later hands the cross to her mother] "I found this [cross]. It's something I... I never considered about her. If she was... if she was such a skeptic, why did she wear that?"
Margaret Scully: "I gave it to her on her fifteenth birthday." [presses cross into Mulder's hand]
Fox Mulder: "Don't you want to keep it?"
Margaret Scully: "When you find her, give it to her."

The cross was returned to Dana by agent Fox "Spooky" Mulder (David Duchovny) on episode "One Breath."  In it, Scully is mysteriously returned to a hospital, but she is in a coma and in very critical condition. In the end, however, Scully awakens and Mulder returns her gold cross to her. On episode "Emily," Scully learns she is the biological mother of three-year-old Emily Christine Sim (Lauren Diewold). Placed in the care Social Services, Emily is driven away but not before Scully places her gold cross around the girl's neck. Later, in the hospital,  Emily has taken ill and Scully and Mulder search  for Sadly, Emily slips into a coma and dies. At the funeral, Scully discovers Emily's body missing when she lifts the casket lid. Inside, there are sandbags, one of which has spilled it content. Incredulous, Scully retrieves her necklace from the sand, holds it up and shuts her eyes. At the very beginning of the episode, Scully experienced a prophetic nightmare in which she discovers her gold cross lying on the ground as a sandstorm rages around her. Slowly, she, too, transforms into sand and dissolves into nothingness. Scully's opening voiceover:

"It begins where it ends... [we see a woman's feet walking slowly] In nothingness. A nightmare born from deepest fears, coming to me unguarded. [long shot of a woman walking across the desert]. Whispering images unlocked from time and distance. [we now see it's Scully walking and wearing a long dark blue flowing gown] A soul unbound - touched by others but never held. On a course charted by some unseen hand. The journey ahead promising no more than my past reflecting back upon me. Until at last, I reach the end. [she picks up her cross necklace from the sand] Facing a truth I can no longer deny. Alone, as ever." [close-up of her face as it turns into sand and blows away]

Trivia Note: The episode "Christmas Carol" stated that Scully received the cross at Christmas and thus contradicted the original back story mentioned in "Ascension" that Scully received the cross on her 15th birthday from her mother. Mrs. Scully said it would show her how God is always looking after her, whatever happens.
