Vocal Groups (Pop & Rock)

The Partridge Family - The pop rock and roll band featured on the situation comedy THE PARTRIDGE FAMILY/ABC/1970-74.

The Partridge Family

The Partridge Family band was headed by Shirley Partridge (Shirley Jones), the lead vocalist and widowed housewife from San Pueblo, California. The rest of band consisted of her five children, which included:

  • Keith Partridge (David Cassidy), a sixteen year-old
  • Laurie Partridge (Susan Dey), a fifteen year-old
  • Danny Partridge (Danny Bonaduce), a freckled 10-year-old
  • Christopher Partridge (Jeremy Gelbwaks/Brian Forster), a  seven-year-old
  • Tracy Partridge (Suzanne Crough), a five-year-old
  • Ricky Stevens (Ricky Segall), a four-year-old neighborhood child (who joined the group during the 1973-74 season)

The Partridge Family band traveled to their gigs in a multi-colored school bus. David Madden played Reuben Kinkaid, the group's fast-talking manager. Simone was the family dog.

PARTRIDGE FAMILY THEME SONG (Season 1)

Come on now and meet everybody,
And hear us singing,
There's nothing better than being together,
When we're singing.

Five of us, and mom working all day,
We knew we could help her if our music could pay.
Danny got Rueben to sell our songs,
And it really came together when mom sang along.

Come on down and meet everybody,
And hear us singing,
There's nothing better than being together,
When we're singing, (3X)

PARTRIDGE FAMILY THEME SONG (Season 2-4)

Hello, world, here's the song that we’re singin’
C’mon get happy!
A whole lot of lovin’ is what we’ll be bringin’
We’ll make you happy!

We had a dream, we’d go travelin’ together,
We’d spread a little lovin’ then we’d keep movin’ on.
Somethin’ always happens whenever we’re together
We get a happy feelin’ when we’re singing a song.

Trav’lin’ along there’s a song that we’re singin’
C’mon get happy!
A Whole lot of lovin’ is what we’ll be bringin’
We’ll make you happy!

An animated spin-off THE PARTRIDGE FAMILY, 2200 A.D. was broadcast on ABC from 1974-75. It transplanted the rock and roll band into outer space.

Cities rising in the sky,
Freeway traffic jetting high,
The future's here for us to see,
It's 2200 A. D.

It's the Partridge Family,
Showing us how it's gonna be,
The Partridge Family,
Loving it all and having a ball,
In 2200 A.D.

TRIVIA NOTE: The Partridge Family was loosely based on the real singing family, The Cowsills. In reality, only Shirley Jones and David Cassidy were musically talented. The rest of the music on the show (Susan Dey on keyboard, Danny on Guitar, for example) were performed by studio musicians.

In 1970, the Partridge Family had a hit song with "I Think I Love You" which sold over four million copies. In 1971, the Partridge Family produced the hit songs "Doesn't Somebody Want to Be Wanted"; "I'll Meet You Halfway"; and "I' Woke Up In Love This Morning." David Cassidy had a solo hit with "Cherished" the same year. See also BUSES: "The Partridge Family Bus"
