It's a Winter Festival (For Us All)
(A Multicultural Holiday Song)
(Lyrics by Jerome A. Holst © 12/11/2005)

(Verse) There's a chill in the air
Snow is falling down
It's a special time of year
When love is all around
The people in the streets
Wear smiles on their faces
As the sounds of Happy Holiday
Fill the smallest places
(Chorus) It's a Winter Festival
For us all
It's the time of year to stop
And recall
Was I the best that I could be?
Did I help my brothers in need?
It's a Winter Festival
For us all

(Bridge) Some decorate trees with lights
Some kneel before a manger
Some celebrate their ancient rites
Remembering past dangers
Some look up to the moon and stars
And give thanks to Mother Nature
For the bounty She has laid
Upon their humble tables

(Chorus2) Oh, it's a Winter Festival
For us all
It's the time of year to stop
And recall
Was I naughty? Was I nice?
Have I lead a fruitful life?
Oh It's a Winter Festival
For us all
REPEAT BRIDGE
(Chorus 3) It's a Winter Festival
For us all
It's the time of year to stop
And recall
Where have we been? Where are we going?
As the snow outside keeps gently blowing
It's a Winter Festival
For us all
(End) And though we may be many
We celebrate as one
It's a Winter Festival
For us all
It's a Winter Festival
For us all

Happy Hanukkah!
Merry Christmas!
Happy Kwanzaa!
Happy Solstice!
Happy Festivus!

TRIVIA NOTE: As many groups lay claim to the winter season as their own special time of the year, it occurred to me that in the spirit of Rodney King's plea "Why can't we just all get along?", I decided to write a holiday song that shared the winter season with everyone. After all, before all the celebrations, and all the belief systems, winter was here first, in all its frozen majesty for anyone to enjoy.

So, despite our differences, let's all come together and acknowledge the Winter Festival as an all encompassing umbrella event which hosts the many celebrations of Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Winter Solstice and even, Festivus (for the rest of Us).
