  Oaths & Pledges - Government

"I do solemnly swear that I will faithfully..." -  Every four years the public of the United States has the privilege to hear this oath uttered by the person they have chosen as their president. Raising his (or her) right arm, the president-to-be pledges before a crowd of television cameras and spectators: "I do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the Office of the President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States." On the western drama LAW OF THE PLAINSMAN/NBC/1959-60 Apache Indian Sam Buckhart (Michael Ansara) took an oath of office to become a frontier lawman. The oath asks:. "Do you swear to uphold the Constitution of the United States and the territory of New Mexico, to do your duty as a Deputy US Marshal without favor or prejudice, so help you God?" Sam responded, "I do."
