Phoebe Buffay's Box - On the sitcom
FRIENDS/NBC/1994-2004, Phoebe Buffay (Lisa Kudrow), a ditsy but loveable folk
singer/masseuse, carries the incinerated remains of her dead grandmother in a
small wooden box. She keeps the box underneath the seat of her car (an old
yellow taxi cab).

Phoebe Buffay at play
On episode No. 119 "The One with Joey's Big Break" (aired May 13, 1999),
struggling actor Joey Tribianni (Matt LaBlanc) borrows Phoebe's taxi to travel
to Las Vegas to appear in a movie. Along the way, Joey stops to phone the gang
back in New York City and asks Phoebe about a box that slid out from under the
front seat of the car. Nonchalantly, Phoebe informs Joey "Oh, that's Grandma!"
and thanks Joey for giving her such a good time.
Some more about Grandma:
- Phoebe now lives in the apartment formerly owned by her grandmother at 5
Morton Street Apartment #14 New York City, NY (Greenwich Village). Her
grandmother raised Phoebe after her mother committed suicide.
- On episode No. 33 "The One with Phoebe's Dad" (aired December 14, 1995)
Phoebe discovers that the photograph of the man in a frame kept around her
grandmother's place was not really her father and inspired a search for him.
- On episode No. 110 "The One with Joey's Bag" (aired February 4, 1991)
Phoebe's grandmother dies. The funeral service is attended by Phoebe's
long-lost father Frank Sr. who had abandoned her.
- On episode No. 149 "The One with Phoebe's Cookies" (aired October 19,
2002) Phoebe wants to give her grandmother's secret cookie recipe to her best
friend Monica Geller (Courtney Cox) as a wedding gift, but discovers the
recipe had been destroyed when her grandmother's apartment had a fire. To
recreate the recipe, Monica Geller used a few left over cookies and
taste-tested them for the ingredients. The final recipe revealed that
grandmother's "secret" cookie recipe was the same as the recipe found on the
box of Nestle's Tollhouse cookies.
TRIVIA NOTE: Phoebe also has an estranged twin sister named Ursula who works as a waitress
and a half brother named Frank, Jr. (Giovanni Ribisi). And Phoebe's supposedly
"dead" mother Phoebe, Sr. (Teri Garr) miraculously resurfaced on episode No. 74
"The One with the Jellyfish" (aired September 25, 1997).
