R2-D2 & C-3PO - The Laurel
and Hardy of the robot world featured in the animated TV series
DROIDS (1985) and STAR WARS: CLONE WARS (2003).

R2-D2 (a.k.a."R2") and C-3PO debuted in the epic
sci-fi movie Star Wars (1977) and continued to appear
in its subsequent spinoffs, including:
- Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
- Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi (1983)
- Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999)
- Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones (2002)
- Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith (2005)
In the movies, Kenny Baker played the role of
R2-D2, an astromech droid who communicated in
high-pitched sound waves and Anthony Daniels
played the role of C-3PO, the gold-colored
protocol droid with a British accent who was
programmed to handle matters such as etiquette,
customs and translations.
Like the comedy team of Laurel and Hardy, the
two droids would always be getting into a series
of "fine messes" with C-3PO complaining about
various situations.
C-3PO's home planet is Tatooine. He was adopted and rebuilt
by a young man named Anakin Skywalker (later to become Darth Vader) who found
C-3PO's discarded on a street in Mos Espa. He
hoped to use the droid to help his mother Shmi
(who later died at the hands of Tusken Raiders).
When C-3PO met R2-D2 (working for the Naboo defense forces) the little droid declared that C-3PO
was "naked", which quite upset the prim and proper protocol droid.
The remark came from the fact that when Anakin Skywalker attempted to
reconstruct C-3PO he did not have the money to
provide his droid with the correct coverings.
Padmé Amidala, the Queen of Naboo (and the
future mother of Luke Skywalker and Princess
Leia Organa) put C-3PO's fears to rest
when she declared the droid was perfect.

R2-D2 and C-3PO later teamed up with Princess Leia of
Alderaan to deliver a message to retired Jedi Knight Obi-Wan
Kenobi to help her defeat the dark forces of an evil empire.
R2-D2 carried a holographic message of the Princess inside
his little droid frame and projected a tiny version of the
princess, who said "Help me Obi-Wan Kenobi, your my only hope."
With the assistance of Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan, R2-D2 and
C-3PO set out to save the galaxy from Darth Vader (Luke's
father).
TRIVIA NOTE: The 554 foot
skyscraper at 111 Huntington Avenue in Boston, Massachusetts
(completed in 2002) has been nicknamed the R2-D2 Building
because its open domed shape resembles the popular Star Wars
Character.
