Vipers -
Fighter spacecraft featured on the science fiction series BATTLESTAR GALACTICA/ABC/1978-80
and the remake series BATTLESTAR GALACTICA/ABC/SCI/2004-2009.
The Viper was a high speed, one man
patrol/fighting craft equipped with twin laser
cannons that were stationed in launch pads on either side of the mile-wide
Battlestar Galactica.
Their primary function was defending the
Battlestar and its rag-tag fleet of survivors
from the
Cylon robot warriors who chased them
through space.
The Vipers could also land-on and
take-off a planet's surface, if the need arose.
The Viper pilots wore helmets shaped like
an Egyptian headdress and were grouped into
squads by color designation.
Top pilots from the Red Squad included:
- Captain Apollo (Richard Hatch)
- Lt. Starbuck (Dirk Benedict)
- Lt. Boomer (Herb Jefferson, Jr.)
The Vipers (also referred to as "Colonial Vipers")
had three rear thruster engines, forming a
triangular exhaust configuration.

The seven
viper models used on the series were constructed
of a dense foam around a metal armature with
working lights and tubes for freon expulsion.

GALACTICA, the Viper pilots defending the fleet
