Vipers - Spacecraft on the sci-fi series BATTLESTAR GALACTICA/ABC/1978-80. The Viper was a high speed, one man patrol/fighting craft equipped with twin laser cannons, stationed in launch pads that ringed either side of the mile-wide Battlestar Galactica. Their primary function was defending the Battlestar and its rag-tag  fleet of survivors from the Cylon robot warriors who chased them through space. They could also land-on and take-off a planet's surface, if the need arose. The Viper pilots wore helmets shaped like an Egyptian headdress and were grouped into squads by color designation.

Top pilots from the Red Squad included Captain Apollo (Richard Hatch); Lt. Starbuck (Dirk Benedict); and Lt. Boomer (Herb Jefferson, Jr.).

The Vipers (also referred to as Colonial Vipers) had three rear thruster engines, forming a triangular exhaust configuration. The seven viper models used on the series were constructed of a dense foam around a metal armature with working lights and tubes for freon expulsion.
