ACTION IN THE AFTERNOON/CBS/1953-54
- Daily western adventure telecast live weekday afternoons from the backlot of TV station WCAU in Philadelphia. Set in the 1890s town of Huberle, Montana, the program starred Jack Valentine as a guitar playing, singing cowboy. Blake Ritter was the narrator. (30 Minutes) 

THE ADVENTURES OF BLACK BEAUTY/SYN/1972-73 - Equine series based on the classic novel Black Beauty (1877) written by Anne Sewell (1820-1878) about a horse who suffers abuse from a series of owners in Victorian, England, this series adaptation (52 episodes) followed the story of a horse named Beauty and her teenage companion, Victoria Gordon (Judi Bowker). In 1978 NBC-TV presented a lavish five-part miniseries based on the novel set in 19th century Maryland. In the novel, Beauty was harnessed to a temperamental chestnut mare named Ginger. TRIVIA NOTE: THE ADVENTURES OF THE BLACK STALLION/FAM/1990-93 told the tale of another black horse adapted from the classic children's novel by Walter Farley about Henry Dailey (Mickey Rooney), a grumpy horse trainer who helped an aspiring teenage jockey named Alec Ramsey (Richard Ian Cox) realize his dreams of glory in the racing world. 

THE ADVENTURES OF BRISCO COUNTY, JR./FOX/1993-94 - Based in the city of San Francisco in 1893, this western adventure followed the exploits of Harvard-educated attorney Brisco County, Jr (Bruce Campbell) who turned bounty hunter after the villainous John Bly Gang killed his famous frontier marshal Brisco County, Sr. With the assistant of fellow bounty hunter, Lord Bowler (Julius Carry), Brisco tracked down Bly (Billy Drago), and a mysterious golden orb that came from the future. THE ADVENTURES OF CHAMPION/CBS/1955-56  - A group of 26, 1/2 hour episodes about Champion, a once mighty leader of a herd of wild horses who was befriended by a twelve-year-old boy named Ricky North (Barry Curtis); his Uncle Sandy (Jim Bannon)  and Rebel, Ricky's German shepherd dog. A program narrative described Champion as follows "Like a streak of lightning flashing across the sky, like a mighty cannonball he seems to fly; soon everyone will know the name of Champion, the Wonder Horse." The series was the outgrowth a 1950s comic book series Gene Autry's Champion, a Chestnut Tennessee walking horse. THE ADVENTURES OF CYCLONE MALONE/SYN/1950 - Western puppet series starring cowboy Cyclone Malone (voice of Ross Jones). Originally aired in 1949 as a local Los Angeles show on KNBH-TV.  (15 & 30 Minutes) 

THE ADVENTURES OF DAVY CROCKETT/ABC/1954-55 - Fess Parker starred as the legendary frontiersman/Indian fighter in a series one-hour adventures first aired under the "Frontierland" banner on WALT DISNEY/ABC/1954-61. The original one hour episodes included Davy Crockett, Indian Fighter (12/15/54); Davy Crockett Goes To Congress (1/26/55); and Davy Crockett At The Alamo (2/23/55). When Davy Crockett fans clamored for additional stories, Disney created a series of new adventures about Davy's earlier days, among them tales with Mike Fink (Jeff York), a rowdy, blustery riverman. (60 Minutes) 

THE ADVENTURES OF JIM BOWIE/ABC/1956-58 - Adventure series set in New Orleans after the Louisiana Purchase during the early 1830s. Scott Forbes starred as the knife-throwing frontiersman, Jim Bowie. (30 Minutes) 

THE ADVENTURES OF JUDGE ROY BEAN  See - "Judge Roy Bean" 

THE ADVENTURES OF KIT CARSON/SYN/1951-55 - Bill Williams (died 9/21/92) starred as frontier scout Christopher "Kitt" Carson who roamed the Old West with his Mexican sidekick, El Toro (Don Diamond). (30 Minutes) 

THE ADVENTURES OF LARIAT SAM/CBS/1962-65 - Animated cartoon seen on the children's program CAPTAIN KANGAROO. Hero Lariat Sam never carried a gun. His sidekick Tippitoes, a poetry reading equine (a.k.a. "Wonder Horse") assisted Sam when battling their nemesis, Badlands Meeny. The series was created by Robert Keeshan (a.k.a. "Captain Kangaroo"). Voices supplied by Dayton Allen. (5 Minutes) 

THE ADVENTURES OF OKY DOKY/DUM/1948-49 - Puppet series starring a 30-inch mustachioed puppet named Oky Doky (voice of Dayton Allen), who lived on a dude ranch and entertained children with stories, games and prizes.(15 & 30 Minutes) 

THE ADVENTURES OF POW WOW/SYN/1957 - *(Animated Character) Pow Pow, an Indian boy featured on a series of twenty-six moralistic stories telecast during the morning children's program CAPTAIN KANGAROO. Produced by Tempe-Toons in 1956, the series was syndicated by Screen Gems.(5 minutes)  Adventures of Pow Wow - ToonTracker

THE ADVENTURES OF WILD BILL HICKOK/ABC/SYN/1951-58 - The exploits of frontier US Marshal James Butler "Wild Bill" Hickok (Guy Madison) and his plump raspy-voiced sidekick, Jingles (Andy Devine) as they helped maintain law and order in the Old West of the 1870s.  See also "The Young Riders" (30 Minutes) 

THE ALASKANS/ABC/1959-60 - Northern adventure set in the 1890s starring Roger Moore as Silky Harris and Jeff York as Reno McKee, two adventurers in search of fortune in the gold rush town of Skagway. (60 Minutes) 

ALIAS SMITH AND JONES/ABC/1971-73 - The tale of two train/bank robbers Hannibal Heyes (Peter Deuel/Roger Davis) and Jed "Kid" Curry (Ben Murphy) who struck a deal with territorial governor for amnesty. The hitch: they had to go straight for one year. In the meantime they still would stay wanted by the law. Some deal! (60 Minutes) 

ALKALI IKE/CBS/1950 - Set on a ranch somewhere in the west, ventriloquist Al Robinson hosted this children's puppet series about a western dummy called Alkali Ike. (15 Minutes) 

THE AMERICAN WEST/SYN/1965 - Produced by Bill Burrud, this western anthology adventure featured stories of the Old West shot on location. (30 Minutes) 

THE AMERICAN WEST OF JOHN FORD - A special nostalgic program that aired on CBS on December 5, 1971 and looked at the Old West and westerns with such guest stars as John Wayne, Henry Fonda and James Stewart. (60 Minutes) 

THE AMERICANS/NBC/1961 - Civil War drama about the Canfield brothers, Ben (Darryl Hickman) who joined the Union and Jeff (Dick Davalos) who decided to fight for the Confederacy. (60 Minutes) 

ANNIE OAKLEY/SYN/1954 - Gail Davis starred as female frontier sharpshooter, Annie Oakley. Jimmie Hawkins and Brad Johnson co-starred as brother Tagg Oakley and Deputy Lofty Craig. Produced by Gene Autry's Flying "A" Productions, the series was based on real-life character who lived from 1859 to 1926. (30 Minutes)
