THE DAKOTAS/ABC/1963 - Set in the Black Hills/Badlands region of the Dakota Territory, Larry Ward starred as US Marshal Frank Ragan who maintained law and order with the help of his three deputies J.D. Smith (Jack Elam), Del Stark (Chad Everett) and Vance Porter (Mike Greene). (60 Minutes) 

DALLAS/CBS/1978-91 - Larry Hagman starred as J.R. Ewing, son of Jock Ewing (Jim Davis), the owner of Ewing Oil based in Dallas, Texas. This contemporary primetime soap used the sprawling backdrop of the oil industry to showcase the vicious business dealings as well as the internal family conflicts of this Lone Star family. An undercurrent of rivalry continually existed between Bobby Ewing (Patrick Duffy), J.R.'s brother and Cliff Barnes (Ken Kercheval), the son of "Digger" Barnes, a former partner of Jock Ewing. (60 Minutes) 

DANIEL BOONE/NBC/1964-70 - Set in the wilderness area of the Kentucky/Tennessee region of early America, Fess Parker former star of the Disney's Davy Crockett movies starred as another legendary American frontiersman Daniel Boone (1734-1820), the founder/defender of the town of Boonesboro, Kentucky. His close friends included his wife, Rebecca (Patricia Blair); daughter, Jemima (Veronica Cartwright); his son, Israel (Darby Hinton); tavernkeeper, Cincinnatus (Dallas McKennon); Indian sidekick, Mingo (Ed Ames); and Yadkin (Albert Salmi), a traveling companion. (60 Minutes)

DEADWOOD/HBO/2004+ - Set in 1876 (two weeks after Custer's defeat at Little Big Horn), the series chronicles the tales of the lawless town of Deadwood, South Dakota, an illegal settlement in the Black Hills Indian Cession - the center of one of the richest gold strikes in American history. The citizens of this rowdy frontier town consist of Seth Bullock (Timothy Oliphant), a former marshal turned merchant and his partner Sol Starr (John Hawkes), the owners of a hardware store that supplies the local prospectors with gold-digging equipment; Al Swearengen (Ian McShane), the corrupt, ruthless owner of the Gem Saloon who provides liquor and prostitutes to the town folk; legendary gunslinger/frontiersman Wild Bill Hickok (Keith Carradine); and Brom Garret (Timothy Omundson), who traveled from New York City with his socialite wife, Alma (Molly Parker) to strike it rich in Deadwood. Other characters seen about town included Robin Weigert as Calamity Jane; Dayton Callie as Charlie Utter; Brad Dourif as Doc Cochran; Leon Rippy as Tom Nuttall; Paula Malcomson as Trixie; William Sanderson as E.B. Farnum; W. Earl Brown as Dan Dority; Jim Beaver as Ellsworth; and Powers Boothe as Cy Tolliver, a rival saloon and brothel owner. The show's tagline reads: "Welcome to Deadwood...a hell of a place to make your fortune." (60 Minutes)

DEATH VALLEY DAYS/SYN/1952-75 - Western anthology originally hosted by the "Old Ranger" (Stanley Andrews) featuring tales revolving around the lore of the Death Valley area in southern California. Later hosts included Ronald Reagan, Robert Taylor, Dale Robertson and Merle Haggard. The program was sponsored by 20-Mule Team  Borax. THE DEPUTY/NBC/1959-61 - Set in the Arizona Territory of the 1880s, Henry Fonda starred as Simon Fry, an aging US Marshal who maintained law and order in the town of Silver City often with the help of deputy Clay McCord (Allen Case), a young storekeeper. (30 Minutes) 

DESPERADO/NBC/1987 - Western made-for-TV movie that featured the stories of drifter Duell McCall (Alex McArthur). The sequel to this successful adventure The Return of Desperado (1988) had our saddle tramp assisting a family of black homesteaders. (90 minutes) 

DESTRY/ABC/1964 - John Gavin starred as Harrison Destry, a cautious but able young man who wandered the West in search of evidence that would clear his father, Tom Destry, a former sheriff sent to prison on false robbery charges. The series was based on the novel Destry Rides Again by Max Brand and on the 1939 movie classic of the same name starring James Stewart. (60 Minutes) 

DICK POWELL'S ZANE GREY THEATRE/CBS/1956-62 - Western anthology series hosted by Dick Powell featuring adaptations of the works of famed American writer Zane Grey (1875-1939) and other western authors. (30 Minutes). TRIVIA NOTE: A museum dedicated to Zane Grey is located in the town of Zanesville, Ohio. 

DIRTY SALLY/CBS/1974 - Jeanette Nolan starred as Sally Fergus, a crusty old lady traveling west in a wagon pulled by a mule named Worthless. Dack Rambo costarred as Cyrus Pike, a young ex-gunfighter, who reluctantly accompanied her along the way. (30 Minutes) 

DR. QUINN, MEDICINE WOMAN/CBS/1993-98 - Set in the 1860s town of Colorado Springs, Jane Seymour starred as Dr. Michaela "Mike" Quinn, a single female physician from Boston who moved west to set up practice in the Colorado wilderness. With the help of Byron Sully (Joe Lando), a woodsman with a pet wolf  and a group of orphaned children, Dr. Quinn tackled the rigors of frontier life. 

THE DUDLEY DO-RIGHT SHOW/ABC/1969-70 - Animated cartoon featuring the slapstick adventures of the true blue Northwest Canadian Mountie, Dudley Do-Right (voice of Bill Scott) as he spent time saving his girlfriend, Nell Fenwick (voice of June Foray) from the evil Snidely Whiplash (voice of Hans Conried). Series originally aired as segments of both ROCKY & HIS FRIENDS and THE BULLWINKLE SHOW cartoon series on ABC/NBC from 1959-64. Series created by Bill Scott and Jay Ward Production. (30 Minutes) 

THE DUKES OF HAZZARD/CBS/1979-85 - Contemporary adventure set in rural Hazzard County where two good ol' boys Luke (Tom Wopat) and Bo (John Schneider) Duke raced the back roads in their supped-up car The General Lee. The Duke boys were often pursued by the local police who were controlled by Jefferson Davis "Boss" Hogg (Sorrell Booke), a corrupt, plump little man who owned just about everything in Hazzard, except the Dukes. The series was a modern western with automobile chases. (60 Minutes) 

DUNDEE AND THE CULHANE/CBS/1967 - Set in the late 19th century, John Mills starred as Dundee, a British barrister based in Sausalito, California who traveled about the Old West helping clients, assisted by a younger apprentice called Culhane (Sean Garrison). (60 Minutes) 

DUSTY'S TRAIL/SYN/1973 - Western comedy about a wagon train going west lead by Mr. Callahan (Forrest Tucker) and his bumbling trail assistant, Dusty (Bob Denver). The rest of the passengers were derivative of the characters on GILLIGAN'S ISLAND/CBS/1964-67  (a rich couple, two girls and a guy). (30 Minutes)
